Happy 4th of July! Brian, Tony and I spent the extended holiday weekend visiting Mom and Dad in Indiana. We grilled out every evening, got some yard work done, and then had some fun! And what is more patriotic than exercising our 2nd amendment right on Independence Day? Mom and Dad are active members at their local gun club and they took the three of us to the outdoor range twice during our visit. Besides, Brian and I wanted to break in our G19. :)
Mom and Dad reiterated the basic gun safety rules and we prepped for go time. Brian and Tony had already been to the range with Dad last time all of us were in town, so they were comfortable from the start. I will say, it took a few rounds before I stopped majorly flinching (you can see that in the video below).
This was my first time shooting a gun of any kind since the one and only time I shot a large caliber pistol in the Boundary Waters. I still remember holding it 10-odd years ago. It was kind of terrifying then, to be honest. I was unexpectedly overwhelmed by the realization I was holding something lethal. As you can imagine, I did NOT his the easy target in front of me. It provided a good laugh to everyone else that I missed a giant tree 10-20 feet in front of me. I handed the gun off and that was that.
Fast forward ten years, and I'm now the proud (co)owner of a well-researched Glock 19. I was ready to practice. Still, the experience was at the forefront of my mind when the five of us reached the range. Thankfully, we were the only ones there on the first day, so we could spread out, take our time, and work on our techniques without coordinating with other parties. And it was so laid back that I think everyone had a great time! Even me. :)
Here's a video compilation of our time at – and getting to – the gun range!
